It's important to know that not all cinnamon is created equal. Most of the cinnamon you find on the grocery store shelves is cassia cinnamon, which can be toxic to the liver in large quantities due to its very high coumarin content. Ceylon cinnamon, also known as "true" or "real" cinnamon, is extremely high in antioxidants and very different from Cassia cinnamon.

About Ceylon cinnamon in brief

Cinnamon is a very delicate smelling and tasting raw material, extracted from the Cinnamomum cinnamon tree. The use of cinnamon dates back thousands of years as a spice and as an ingredient in medicine. To date, numerous studies have been published on the health effects of cinnamon, including studies on its properties on blood sugar levels. It has also been shown to have a very high antioxidant content.

Effects and properties of cinnamon

Cinnamon is full of powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols (1) The main constituents are cinnamaldehyde and trans-cinnamaldehyde, which are also present in cinnamon essential oils. These are responsible for its strong, spicy aroma and some of its biological effects on our body. In ancient times, it was often used as a toothpowder to maintain good oral hygiene and health. Why avoid cinnamon preparations with high coumarin content?
