WHERE DOES THE NAME OF ROSE CANINA (ROSA CANINA L.) COME FROM?
The species name "canina" comes from the Latin "canis", meaning "dog". The name of this species can be attributed to the writings of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC) and the older Roman naturalist Pliny (23-79 AD), in which writings it was suggested that the wild R. canina root preparation can be used to treat rabid dog bites. Another, and probably more likely, theory is that the species was formerly known as "dag rose" (from the Italian daga, meaning dagger, referring to its stout spikes), which was changed to "dog rose" as a result of a misunderstanding.
