Despite its rock-like appearance, coral is a marine organism, a microscopic coelenterate (space invertebrate) belonging to the same family as sea roses. Living corals filter seawater and excrete minerals (mainly calcium carbonate) to build up their outer skeleton, the hard, branched part that we all know. As this skeleton grows, other corals attach to it and multiply, eventually forming large blocks called coral reefs.
The main component of coral is calcium. In fact, 86% of coral is made up of calcium carbonate, the most abundant form of this mineral.
