BCAAs (z ang. Branched-chain amino acids) are branched-chain amino acids that, as the name suggests, are characterized by having a branched side chain. BCAAs contain amino acids such as L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine. They are exogenous compounds that must be supplied to the body from the outside, either with the daily diet or in the form of dietary supplements, as the body is incapable of synthesizing them on its own. BCAAs make up about ⅓ of the proteins that build muscle tissue and the site of their breakdown, unlike other amino acids, is mainly skeletal muscle, which makes branched-chain amino acids readily used by physically active people.
