What should you know about milk thistle seed oils?
The healing effect of milk thistle seeds on the liver is well known, but at the same time it is worth knowing that the main active ingredients are not fat soluble. Therefore, the most important active ingredients (silymarin/silybin) are present in a much lower concentration in milk thistle seed oil, such as e.g. in an alcoholic or acetone extract.
What is milk thistle good for and what are its active ingredients?
Milk thistle supports bile and liver function, can reduce cholesterol levels, and also participates in the regeneration of liver cells. In addition, its main active ingredient is also attributed with powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and tumor-preventing effects. Most people know silymarin as the main active ingredient in milk thistle. It is less well known that silymarin is not an active ingredient, but a flavonolignan complex (it includes 13 different types of flavonolignans), whose main active ingredient for the liver is silybin (a mixture of silybin A and silybin B).
The concentration of milk thistle's silymarin or flavonolignan complex can vary widely. It can also be influenced by the quality of the soil, the amount of precipitation, as well as geographical, climatic and agricultural factors. In the case of the latter, an important aspect is, for example, when the seeds were sown, when they were watered and at what stage of the plant's development the harvest took place. In fact, it was observed that the silybin concentration changes in different stages of development, for example, a reduced value was identified in the case of a plant harvested at the time of flowering. In order to eliminate the influence of these variables, it is advisable to always choose a preparation that contains silymarin and silybin as a standardized extract.
