Nature has created something very exciting with vitamin B12. It is a miracle that a highly complex molecule built around a single cobalt atom could become so important for so many physiological functions (see above), but its amazing power is also impressive.
Vitamin B-12 is water soluble and should be supplemented daily with food or food supplements. This vitamin works best when taken with vitamin C, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2) and magnesium.
Interesting fact
The human body cannot produce it, or can only produce it to a very small extent. For example, the bacteria in the large intestine (if all is well with our gut flora) can produce vitamin B12, but it is in insignificant amounts and is no longer absorbed from the large intestine and therefore cannot be utilised.
B vitamins: together or separately?
Individual B vitamins have specific, positive effects on health. But all nine types of B vitamins are members of a closely related family. If you are taking large amounts of one of the B vitamins, you would be well advised to take a B-complex (or multivitamin) supplement. If, for example, you feel that vitamin B1 is good for your mood, you can take it, but you should also take a B-complex or multivitamin. That way, the treatment is more effective and you don't go short of another vitamin by taking a disproportionate amount of one.
