Glycine was isolated from gelatine in 1820, and shortly afterwards it was the first artificially produced amino acid. Glycine is the simplest non-essential amino acid and is the building block of many other compounds, playing an important role in biochemical mechanisms in the body.
It is most abundant in collagen, in which it is present in 25-30% of the total. Glycine occurs in small amounts in other protein sources.
