Vitamin D, also known as "sunshine vitamin", plays an essential role in bone health and slows down osteoporosis.
Few people know, but a large proportion of the population develop vitamin D deficiency during the winter months when there is less sunlight. Vitamin D is converted into an active form in the body by the sun, i.e. UVB radiation.
Vitamin D is essential for the normal functioning of the body. This fat-soluble vitamin, often referred to as a hormone, is the focus of increasing research. There is now no doubt that its role in the body is much more complex than just maintaining bone health.
Vitamin D is essential for regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood, strengthening bones and maintaining healthy teeth. Vitamin D also plays an important role in the prevention of osteoporosis. Without vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium from the diet. When blood calcium levels are low, the body draws calcium from the bones. Over time, calcium is depleted from the bones and severe osteoporosis occurs. Vitamin D is also important for maintaining a healthy immune system.
- Essential for building strong bones and teeth
- Promotes the absorption of calcium
- Strengthens the immune system
- Supports regeneration after intense physical exertion
The body's ability to produce vitamin D declines with age, which is why vitamin D deficiency is common among older people.
Current recommendations suggest that the daily recommended intake of vitamin D is 2000 IU from October to March. Double this, 4000 IU, is recommended for menopause, infectious diseases and osteoporosis. A growing number of studies are coming out showing that in the long term, 10,000 IU of vitamin D may not pose any risk in healthy adults. However, side effects have been reported at extremely high intakes (50,000 IU and above) for diseases, with such high doses including vomiting, increased urination, thirst, encephalopathy (a disease affecting brain function) and kidney failure.
