NOW® Betaine HCl supports proper digestive processes in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid (HCI) is normally formed in the stomach, where it promotes protein digestion by activating pepsin, helps maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora and stimulates the release of intestinal enzymes. Pepsin is a protein-degrading enzyme produced in the stomach that partially breaks down proteins in food.
The amount of stomach acid is affected by diet, coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol consumption, as well as excessive stress, certain medications and a lack of certain vitamins. But there are also diseases that can be linked to low levels of stomach acid.
In order for food to be properly digested by the body, the stomach needs adequate acidity. Without adequate levels of these, the food you eat will not be fully broken down, which means that the absorption of nutrients will not be complete.
Unfortunately, as we age, the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach also starts to decline. Without it, however, the breakdown of the nutrients in the body will not be complete.
