5 tips for successful exams
The good news is that Christmas and winter holidays will soon be here. But the bad news is that it also means exam season is upon us, with its mad rush, sleepless nights and constant stress.
Exam season is the time of the year when our coffee consumption increases significantly, our hours of sleep decrease, our social life is reduced and we honestly just want to get it over and forget about it. But does it have to be like this?
We’ve put together some tips to help you overcome the obstacles and finish the semester on a high:
1. Make a study plan
There’s nothing worse than forgetting an exam date in the rush, or slipping behind schedule. If you make a timetable, it’s easier for you to see how much time you need to spend. If you break down the study material into smaller chapters and start preparing early enough, you’ll have time for everything and won’t have to spend the night poring over books at the last minute.
2. Take breaks
Our brains need to rest too. No matter how hard you try to force yourself to study without a break, you can’t stay focused for days on end. To make a learning cycle as effective as possible, it’s good idea to take short breaks. You don’t need to be stuck in the library from opening to closing, glued to the screen. A refreshing walk, some exercise or a chat with friends will take you away from the monotony of studying, refresh you and get you back to your studies with renewed energy.
3. Get enough sleep
We tend to forget the importance of getting the right amount and quality of rest. But like exercise, quality sleep helps reduce your stress levels, and it’s easier to study when you’re well rested. Your body regenerates while you sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, your cortisol (stress hormone) levels will increase and it will become harder for your body to relax, making it harder for you to rest.
4. Pay attention to your diet
Avoid fast food and snacks! These foods can be convenient and quick solution when you’re pressed for time, but we need to know that, as with training and learning, our diet has a big impact on our performance. So try to eat whole, nutrient-dense foods and make sure you stay hydrated. And look for alternatives to energy drinks and excessive coffee consumption. Tea, especially ginseng, green and black tea, can be a good alternative, as they have a longer absorption time than coffee and therefore last longer.
5. Support your organisation
In the exam period, it’s a good idea to make sure your body gets all the nutrients to cope with the stress and performance and to succeed, and you can also support your exam preparation with other supplements. One such supplement is ginko biloba, which has a vasodilating effect, improving blood and oxygen supply to the brain. Like ginko biloba, ginseng root help improve concentration, alertness and memory. It is also worth paying attention to your Omega-3 intake, as it supports brain health, stimulates memory and concentration, and don’t forget to take your B vitamins, as they help fight fatigue and contribute to a healthy nervous system.
However difficult and often seemingly hopeless this period may be, it will soon be over. But if you work hard, give yourself the time you need and try to find balance, you’ll be fine.
